Local Services Ads — Tampa Bay
The slot above everything else.
Local Services Ads sit at the very top of Google — above the search ads, above the map. You pay per lead instead of per click, and the Google Screened badge does the trust work before anyone reads a word.
What Local Services Ads actually is
Local Services Ads are Google's pay-per-lead format for service businesses. They appear above every other result, show a green Google Screened badge, and charge you only when someone calls or messages you — not when they click.
The badge is the real asset. Getting it means Google has verified your licence, your insurance, and run a background check. For a homeowner deciding who to let into their house, that verification is doing more work than any headline you could write.
- Charged per lead, not per click
- Google Screened badge shown next to your name
- Requires verified licence and insurance
- Bad leads can be disputed and refunded
What managing them involves
LSAs are not a set-and-forget channel. Three of these four are ongoing.
Getting Google Screened
Background check, licence verification, and insurance verification. It's paperwork, it's slow, and it's the part most contractors abandon halfway. We run it end to end and chase the parts that stall.
Answering the phone
LSA leads are phone calls, and Google watches whether you pick up. Miss calls and your ranking drops. This is the single most common reason a contractor's LSAs quietly stop delivering.
Disputing bad leads
You get charged for wrong numbers, out-of-area calls, and people looking for a job. Google will refund them, but only if someone actually files the dispute. We do that every week — it's money most contractors leave on the table.
Reviews feed the ranking
LSA position is driven heavily by review count, rating, responsiveness, and proximity. The review system we build for local SEO does double duty here.
The part nobody warns you about: answering the phone
LSA leads arrive as calls, and Google tracks whether you pick up. A contractor who is on a roof all day and lets calls go to voicemail will watch his ranking slide, then conclude LSAs don't work. They did work — the channel was punishing him for something that had nothing to do with the ads.
This is where automated follow-up earns its keep. A missed call that triggers an instant text back within seconds recovers a meaningful share of leads that would otherwise just call the next contractor on the list.
Questions we get asked
- What are Local Services Ads?
- They're the block of businesses with a green Google Screened badge that appears at the very top of Google — above the paid search ads and above the map pack. You're charged per lead rather than per click, and a lead means someone actually called or messaged you.
- How is that different from Google Ads?
- Position, pricing, and trust. LSAs sit higher on the page, you pay per lead instead of per click, and the Google Screened badge signals that your licence and insurance have been verified. Google Ads gives you far more control over exactly which searches you appear for. Most contractors benefit from running both, with LSAs first.
- How long does verification take?
- Usually a few weeks, sometimes longer. It depends on how quickly the background check clears and whether your licence and insurance documents match your business name exactly. Mismatches are the usual delay, and they're worth checking before you apply.
- What counts as a lead I get charged for?
- A phone call over a certain length, or a message through the ad. You are not charged for someone simply seeing or clicking the ad. You can be charged for calls that turn out to be irrelevant — which is why disputing them matters.
- Can I get refunded for bad leads?
- Yes, within a window. Wrong numbers, services you don't offer, areas you don't cover, and job seekers are all disputable. The catch is that nobody does it for you automatically. If you're running LSAs unmanaged, you're almost certainly paying for leads you could have reclaimed.
- Why did my LSA leads suddenly stop?
- Usually one of four things: missed calls dragging your responsiveness score down, budget exhausted early in the month, a lapsed licence or insurance document, or new competitors entering your area. It's rarely mysterious once someone looks.
- Do I need a website for LSAs?
- Not to run them — the ad sends calls straight to your phone. But people do look you up before calling, and a weak or missing site costs you some of those calls. It matters less here than for any other channel, though.
The short version
- LSAs sit above the search ads and the map pack, and charge per lead rather than per click.
- The Google Screened badge requires verified licence, insurance, and a background check — that verification is most of the value.
- Verification usually takes a few weeks, and document name mismatches are the common cause of delay.
- Missed calls lower your ranking. This is the most common reason a contractor's LSAs quietly stop delivering.
- Wrong numbers, out-of-area calls, and job seekers are all disputable and refundable — but only if someone files them.
- Reviews drive LSA position, so the local SEO review system feeds this channel too.
